It was January 1, the first day of the year, and I was feeling very change-y (I dub thee 'change-y' as an official word in no one's dictionary starting today.) The night was young at 11:55 PM and in those last 5 minutes before the day expired, I was determined starting off the fresh year with a bang. And so voila! After a year and a half-long abstinence from high-maintenance hairstyles starting in mid-2016, I was craving to try on something new. You see, before that period, I was rather experimental with my hair. 6 months was the longest duration in which I would keep a style before moving on to the next one. I've had layers-- all types of them from semi-layers to just layers on the front to choppy layers, you name it. I've enjoyed long hair and all the types of braids you could do with it; medium hair and all its fun half-dos; and short hair which is simply awesome after a brief blow-dry. I've had my fair share of fun in hair colour too. Reds, pinks, and orange (mostly just variations of warm tones because the colour choice here in the UAE is very limited, as well as, fade out way too easily) streaky highlights that were strategically hidden in my mop of hair was my take on edginess and teenage rebellion. And finally, to top off every look, I've always had fringes. I've tried side bangs; baby bangs; covering-one-eye bangs; choppy, emo bangs; blunt bangs; and, middle-parted bangs. In 2016, however, when my bangs grew too long, I just decided to fully grow them out and maintain a simple bob haircut-- the type that did not require any styling, whatsoever. You just take a shower and go. I honestly did not even comb my hair anymore, and then, I was too distracted with IB to care. After graduation, I had the freedom to experiment once more. However, that was also the time when I started experimenting a bit more on fashion and accessories, as well as started applying some make-up on. Therefore, I thought that a blunt cut, no fringe hairstyle would keep the balance and keep me from looking a little too extra. Also, a fact that I stubbornly denied in the previous years was that having bangs could cause more acne breakouts. When I went fringe-less, my acne indeed lessened and that had been a major reason why I did not immediately jump to having a fringe-cut straight after high school even though it was a look I've loved in previous years. However, the itch to experiment with my look had always been ever-present within me, even though IB forced me to subdue it for a while. And so over the course of the summer, I wanted to seize the opportunity of travelling back to the Philippines, as well as to Singapore, to change up my hairstyle once again. I wanted one or the other of these two things, if not both: I wanted a perm to transform my hair from boring straight to feminine wavy, and I wanted to either try an ombre with icy or pastel shades, or have my whole hair coloured subtly in the way that the colour is only prevalent when I'm under the sun. Both, I was not successful with. I was really interested in getting a Korean-style perm and upon doing a quick Google search, I found that Korean perms came in many different forms but the ones that I like were C-curl, S-curl, and the body wave perm. I was already fantasising about how good I would've looked in any of those perms when. in the end, I couldn't get any kind of perm done whatsoever because the salons either told me that a) since my hair has been previously keratin-treated, it's too slippery for any type of perm to stick-- unless I was up for having curly, curly hair that should wane out little by little after a few months to achieve the wave I was aiming for, or b) they could do the kind of perm I wanted but I was warned that it would stay for 2-4 weeks at most. To both I said, "Sir, no, thank you." After that, I was just generally disheartened and so I didn't even have much of the determination to actively seek out cheap but reputable salons that would color or ombre my hair the way I wanted to anymore. And so, I went back to the UAE with the same hair as I've left with. I haven't really done much of anything to my hair since then. I just had a keratin treatment redone after coming back from vacation to tame the frizz. I've had a few trims at most but I've pretty much stuck to my no-fringe, blunt cut look. I played a lot with my parting style, however, and learned how to use a flat iron to curl my hair-- it's the closest I could get to a perm and hey, it washes out. All in all, I may not have gotten what I originally wanted but I was nonetheless satisfied. (Although, I still sometimes wish for that dark violet or denim blue hair.) The see-through bangs piqued my interest a few months ago (especially after joining the K-Pop Academy) but I was a bit hesitant about having bangs again. They do take a long time to grow out, and if I ended up not liking them, they might be hard to conceal or to be made to disappear amongst the rest of my hair. Another reason, the petty reason, is that with the Hallyu wave at its strongest with BTS' wins and appearances in the US and all, more and more people are picking up interest towards K-culture. And so, more and more people are starting to pick up on Korean styles and fashion. And so, I've also seen a surge of people having the famous Korean-style see-through bangs. In short, I did not want to look like everyone else.
However, recently, while watching a few make-up tutorials, my YouTube autoplayed to a video tutorial of how to do see-through bangs. The procedure shown had been easy enough and when the lady in the video said and proceeded to demonstrate that see-through bangs could be easily hidden away with the rest of the hair-- I knew I had to try it. And the rest... was history. Probably you, right now: Really, -------? Was all of that necessary for you to explain why you cut your bangs? Me: Yes...
